BMS Re, the specialty reinsurance arm of global broking group BMS, is delighted to announce the promotion of Juan Carlos Gomez to the position of Chief Executive Officer of BMS Re Latin America and Caribbean, with immediate effect. In his new role, Gomez will be based in Miami and will report to Nick Gillett, CEO BMS International.

Gomez brings more than 20 years of experience in underwriting and broking to the role, having previously served as Executive Vice-President of Latin America and the Caribbean at BMS Re, where he played a crucial role in co-ordinating product development and placing regional facultative reinsurance and specialty business into the London and European markets. Prior to joining BMS Re, Gomez held various executive positions, including deputy CEO of Carpenter Marsh FAC LAC, CEO of Guy Carpenter Colombia, and VP at Generali Colombia.

The appointment of Gomez as CEO comes at a time when BMS Re is accelerating its international expansion, with the Latin American market being a primary target for growth. His appointment follows BMS Re’s recent acquisition of Mexico City-based specialist reinsurance broker, Calomex, in 2022.

Aidan Pope, Executive Chairman of Latin America and Caribbean of BMS Re, said: “Since joining BMS Re, Juan Carlos has proven to be an integral part of our team. He has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and his ability as a broker and an underwriter combined with his detailed knowledge of the Latin American market has proved indispensable to our growth in the region. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Juan Carlos for many years now and delighted to welcome him to his new role and look forward to working with him and seeing how he continues to build on our impressive trajectory in the area.”

Gomez added: "I am honoured to be heading BMS Re’s Latin American operations at a time when the industry and especially reinsurance is gaining real traction in the region. As the market becomes more sophisticated, so too must our offering. I’m confident that by building on the momentum we have built over the past few years, and the demand for dynamic independent reinsurance brokers BMS Re is in an ideal position to deliver the creative and competitive solutions our clients need.”
