Problem

A severe over-pressurisation incident in a low-pressure natural gas distribution system caused a massive explosion in Massachusetts, USA. The complex market structure – involving Bermuda markets, US domestic insurers, Lloyd’s, and overseas company insurers – posed significant challenges for aligning the claim process.

Solution

Closely collaborating with both internal and US-based brokers to align the market and navigate the policy response, we held strategic meetings – including in Bermuda – so that claims and underwriting teams across all insurers understood the claim details and policy intent. A joint presentation was prepared, streamlining communication and minimising questions from the market.

Outcome

The entire USD800 million General Liability policy limit was successfully collected and paid within 15 months.
