Lloyd's Community Programme -

Having been established for over 30 years, BMS is very much part of the London Market community. We get a great deal from that community and are always looking for ways to give something back

The Lloyd’s Community Programme (LCP) was established over 20 years ago. It offers businesses within the market the opportunity to participate in initiatives that will benefit the local community, particularly supporting the development of schools and the young people in the East London area, which is just on our doorstep.

The LCP has a special relationship with the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership, helping to identify projects and ideas where a real difference can be made.

In 2007, after an inspiring LCP presentation to BMS staff, one of our long-serving members of staff, Jeff Martin, applied to become a Governor of Old Ford Primary School (OFPS), the largest primary school in Tower Hamlets.

In 2008, 9 BMS staff volunteered and were trained to become reading partners at the school. These volunteers now spend one lunchtime a week partnering with a Year 6 pupil who the school has identified would benefit from having one-to-one reading sessions.

As you will see in the Our People section and the video above, the staff of BMS have given their time, but gained a great deal more in return. The scheme has proved extremely popular, with new volunteers joining each year.

Ready for Work

Staff have also participated in the LCP’s Ready for Work program, attending workshops advising groups of 15-year-olds who are applying for work placements on professional practices including interview skills, how to dress, communication and working in an office environment. They found these workshops fun and also challenging as these young people quizzed them thoroughly on their jobs and how to get ahead at work.

Also part of the Ready for Work program is Student Mentoring. The LCP works in conjunction with the Hackney Schools' Mentoring Programme to bring together business mentors and pupils. They meet with their mentees for an hour each week for a full academic year to prepare them for the world of work.

Sporting Chances

BMS staff have also been involved in sports coaching as well as organizing and attending Sporting Chances, sports tournaments for local schools, passing on their love of sport, particularly the love of football from our West Ham supporters!

Lloyd’s / BMS “Insure It” Challenge

Over the last two months, 15 volunteers from BMS helped organise six workshops which were attended by all 90 Year 6 pupils from Old Ford Primary School. These consisted of three workshops held in school for each of the three classes followed by three workshops held at Lloyd’s.

The Lloyd’s / BMS “Insure It” Challenge provided an incredible opportunity for the East London children to find out about the world of work, introducing them to the core concepts of insurance and allowing them to put their knowledge into practice through a series of fun interactive games and activities. They also had the opportunity of spending some time in The Old Library in Lloyd’s and having a tour of the underwriting room (“The Room”).

The programme was funded by the Lloyd’s Community Programme, supported by volunteers from the Lloyd’s market, developed by the Guy Fox History Project Ltd and in conjunction with the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership.

One of the pupils enthused “Thank you for this amazing experience you have given to year 6 at Old Ford Primary School. I enjoyed the tour of the fantastic building very much and I have now been inspired to work at a place like this one day.”

Speak Up

BMS hosted the semi-final heats of the LCP schools’ speaking competition; with staff participating as judges and supporters for the last two years. The final is held in the Old Library at Lloyd's.

The LCP gives BMS a fantastic opportunity to really get involved with making a difference to the area where we spend our working lives and give something back to a great community that has a lot to give in its own right.

In the course of 2011 BMS is committed to rolling out a wider Corporate Social Responsibility programme of its own, inviting staff in both the UK and US to participate in a series of initiatives.

We match our people

We also want to support our staff in their individual charity endeavors and have always had a policy of matched charity funding. Therefore, the Group will match any sponsorship raised by staff for their chosen charities up to a total of £500/$800.

Payroll Giving

BMS is also committed to a payroll giving scheme for which we are proud to have been awarded the attached certificate and kite mark.
